Recently I’ve been reading (mainly at arstechnica) how the entire I/O stack of current operating systems is designed around the slow seek time of a hard disk. That’s part of the reason that we aren’t seeing the huge jumps in performance hoped for from SSD. I’ve been thinking, though, what with Apple abandoning their port of ZFS (and possibly working on a new file system) that they should really design one assuming that it will use an SSD. That work could be put to immediate use in the iPhone (which has been solid state from the beginning) and probably any tablet they are putting together. I don’t think it will be too long before their notebooks adopt SSD as well – especially if, due to a new file system (and other OS changes), it boasts big performance gains over hard disk.
